31 Days: Twenty-Nine

I want to do the SPN 30 Days meme, but I have to finish this one first. So!

(Also, I had a wonderful trip to England and Scotland last week, including hanging with the lovely and generous akadougal, but those pics and stories will wait for another time.)

For day 29: five songs or pieces of music that speak to you or bring back memories.

1) Birdhouse in Your Soul (TMBG)
They Might Be Giants is my favorite band, ever, full stop. Since Flood was the first album of theirs I listened to, this must be the first song of theirs I ever heard. I've seen them in concert, I don't know, at least a dozen times (plus once more in a couple of weeks!!), and no matter how many thousands of times they must have played this song in their careers, they always look happy to be doing it. So it's definitely a happy-making song.

2) Everybody Hurts (R.E.M.)
This is probably my favorite music video of all time. It came out when I was in high school, and teenage bucket of angst that I was, I really, really appreciated its message, and that fact that it was delivered with a melancholy sound.

3) You're My Home (Billy Joel)
I was hugely into Billy Joel in the late 80s and 90s, starting with Storm Front and then going back to his earlier stuff. This song is the one I picked for this post because we used lyrics from it as one of the readings at our wedding. At that point, we had been dating for seven years: one year in Chicago, two years split between Chicago and Minneapolis, a year and a half in Boston, and two and a half years split between Boston and Minneapolis. We didn't know how much more nomadism our academic lifestyle was going to require, either.
Home can be the Pennsylvania Turnpike
Or Indiana's early morning dew
High up in the hills of California
Home is just another word for you
If I travel all my life
And I never get to stop and settle down
Long as I have you by my side
There's a roof above and good walls all around
You're my castle, you're my cabin, and my instant pleasure dome
I need you in my house, 'cause you're my home.

4) The Authority Song (John Mellencamp)
Besides the fact that it makes me think of Sam and Dean, I've adopted this as my running song, always at the end of the playlist. It has exactly the right beat for me to run to, it's cheery and bouncy, and when that opening guitar riff kicks in, I know the end is in sight.

5) Carry On Wayward Son (Kansas)
Duh.

I would find this SUCH a tough question to answer. So I'll just enjoy yours instead!

I want to sit down with TMBG and have them tell me what that song is about. It's one of the first iTunes I ever bought. I really like REM's Nightswimming, a little melancholy and it paints a neat picture in my mind. Cool list you got there.

I bought this a little while ago: http://www.merchdirect.com/TheyMightBeGiants/Accessories/BlueBirdNightLight/?productid=16691

Oh, that's a good one, too...some of the musically inclined folks in my dorm freshman year performed that acoustically on piano and violin, so I always think of them when I hear it. :)
