31 Days: Thirty-one

Woo-hoo, last one! Thanks to everyone for reading these, and especially to harrigan and everyone else who left comments and kept me from feeling like I was speaking into the void. I'm pleased to see that a number of other people have taken up this challenge or one like it in the meantime; let's keep LJ alive!

Day 31: a vivid memory

For some reason, the first vivid memories that came to mind were all really unpleasant, and I didn't want to end on that note. So instead, since it's fall and the leaves will be changing color and falling soon, I'm going to draw on memories of being a kid and playing in the leaves. The house I grew up in had a double lot, all fenced in, so there was lots of room to play. Mom had a vegetable garden, there was an apple and an elm and a spruce tree that were all good for climbing, and there was a little tiny hill that was just big enough to get a sled down when there was snow. There was also open space about the same size as our house, and when the leaves fell, I would start playing with them. Not just in the usual way of raking them up and jumping in the piles, though. At the time, my parents were talking about buying land and building their own house, so they would buy books of house plans, and I would look through them and pick out my favorites. Outside, I would form the leaves into lines that demarcated the floor plan of a house. Sometimes a friend would come over and we'd play our make-believe games inside that "house", or other times it was just me, adding on rooms or rearranging them. There must have been a junior architect inside of me trying to get out. :) I still have a thing for floor plans today, and I blame it on my leaf architecture.

Hmm, at my current rate of posting, that would take about two and a half years. /o\ But it was fun trying to keep up!

This is a sweet memory of something that sounds like it would be a lot of fun. I've enjoyed reading the 31 days. Congrats on sticking with it and doing all 31 days.
